I also give music lessons. I always start checking the level where my student is and build upon that. A basic question I ask beginning students is to think deeply about this one:
What is music?
How do we take 12 notes and make them sound and feel different?
LESSON # 1:
The greatest thing about playing music, is no matter what age you are, or what language you speak, you still get to PLAY. This means you are seriously allowed to be, think and act as a child without having all the adult responsibilities for that moment. Also, music is a universal language everyone on earth enjoys. Some prefer the music of their lawnmower, though.... especially saturday morning at 08:36 :-(
